Winthrop Feels Improvement Is Being Made

Jan 27, 2011 4:35 PM

Winthrop, which sat as low as sixth in the Big South earlier in the season, is starting to string together strong efforts.

They are now 5-4 in the conference, tied for third with North Carolina-Asheville and Charleston Southern.

"I have seen us getting better in the last week," coach Randy Peele said. "The last four or five practices have been our best of the year. Our preparation in the film room has been better. All that said; I'm not going to let up."

George Valentine says the Eagles had become a jump-shooting team.

"We had become a jump shooting team," Valentine said. "The last two games we've had a coach on the bench writing down our shots. If we take three straight jump shots without a post feed we have to run sprints."

Liberty, which has an 8-1 record in the Big South, is trying to focus on the defensive end this season.

The Flames are 14-7 overall.

Liberty entered their latest game boasting the best defense in the Big South, holding opponents under 64 points per game.

“We’re trying to lock down on the defensive end,” point guard Jesse Sanders said. “We’re trying to be the toughest team every time we step out on the court, no matter (who we are playing). We may not always be the biggest or the most talented, but we always want to be the toughest team."

Peele Still Trying To Figure Winthrop Out

Jan 19, 2011 4:43 PM

Winthrop coach Randy Peele is still trying to figure out his team, which is 7-10 this season.

The Eagles are sixth in the Big South with a 3-4 record after losing their last two conference games.

"We have to get better. Our defense isn't where it needs to be," Peele said. "I want to see a greater sense of pride in our ability to defend."

Peele said after Winthrop lost 88-67 to UNC Asheville on Jan. 6 he was going to figure out what the problems were.

"I know what the problems are; I just have to fix them," he said.

J.P. Primm scored a game-high 24 points for UNCA.
